Winn Wong is a Principal Associate in the Technology Practice Group at HHQ. He specializes in the intersection of technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) and intellectual property (IP) law. His practice covers regulatory compliance, technology transactions and dispute resolution, with a particular focus on IP enforcement, digital content regulation and data protection.

Winn regularly advises technology companies, digital platforms and content creators on IP commercialization, trademark protection and copyright issues in the digital space. He has represented clients in a range of IP disputes, including enforcement actions and litigation involving technology-related infringements.

In the area of data protection and compliance, Winn offers both technical expertise and practical experience. He frequently assists clients in developing tailored PDPA policies and governance frameworks. He also has direct experience managing data breach incidents, including advising on regulatory notifications, incident response strategies, and stakeholder communications. He has supported clients across various sectors in navigating data breach response, mitigation, and reputational risk management.

With a strong foundation in both advisory and contentious matters, Winn is well-positioned to navigate complex legal issues at the intersection of TMT and IP.

Work Highlights

  • Successfully represented and defended major multinational corporations in numerous IP litigation cases, involving trademark and copyright infringement as well as passing-off.
  • Assisted in a landmark trademark case that addresses the novel issue of the Malaysian court’s inherent jurisdiction in granting a declaration of non-infringement based on the own name doctrine.
  • Represented the Malaysian Department of Personal Data Protection in a judicial review concerning the disclosure of personal data under the Income Tax Act 1967 and Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
  • Executed and supported criminal anti-counterfeiting efforts for local and global clients across a range of industries, including fashion, engineering, technology, medical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and education, collaborating closely with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living.
  • Drafted and advised on a wide range of IP-related agreements, encompassing, licensing, assignment, co-existence, non-disclosure, joint development and technology transfer, and distribution agreements.
